Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Community policing is an approach to law enforcement that emphasizes collaboration between police and communities to prevent and address crime. In Nigeria, community policing has gained traction as a strategy to combat crime, especially in areas with limited resources and trust in formal security agencies (Eze & Yusuf, 2023). Jalingo Local Government in Taraba State has faced rising crime rates, prompting the adoption of community policing initiatives aimed at fostering cooperation between law enforcement and local communities.

These strategies include the establishment of community policing committees, recruitment of community volunteers, and implementation of conflict resolution mechanisms. While some progress has been recorded, challenges such as inadequate training, funding constraints, and resistance from traditional law enforcement agencies remain (Abubakar et al., 2024). This study evaluates the effectiveness of community policing strategies in reducing crime in Jalingo Local Government, highlighting areas for improvement and best practices.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the introduction of community policing strategies, crime remains a significant challenge in Jalingo Local Government. Factors such as limited resources, poor coordination, and lack of community trust hinder the effectiveness of these initiatives (Ola & Mohammed, 2024). This study examines the impact of community policing strategies and identifies ways to enhance their implementation.
